The gardens were built in 1860 to provide vegetables, fruit, flowers and salads all year round for Lord Roborough and his household at Maristow House.
The Lopes family left Maristow House in 1938 and the gardens were leased to a local market gardener until 1948.
In 1950, the Tottey family moved to Devon from Cheshire to run a nursery and market garden and they worked here until the early part of this century
